If you're in the market for a luxury SUV to add some utility to your weekly routine but don't want something with overlarge space requirements, the 2021 Volvo XC40 is an excellent choice. It offers spacious and luxurious accommodations, engaging driving dynamics, and conveniently sized dimensions for hassle-free navigation of crowded streets and parking lots. Ever since its initial launch in 2019, the XC40 has earned its place among the top small luxury crossovers in the industry. And for the 2021 model year, Volvo's winning subcompact crossover gets even better, with an exciting new electric powertrain and new additions to the base Momentum trim level. Here's a quick look at what's in store.

New Standard Features

In contrast to many luxury brands, Volvo has always offered generously equipped vehicles regardless of trim level, and the XC40 is no different. Last year, the XC40 came standard with LED headlights with automatic high beams, automatic climate control, leatherette upholstery, a power liftgate, a 9-inch Sensus touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a suite of advanced safety features. For 2021, Volvo further bolsters the Momentum's feature list, adding leather upholstery, LED fog lights with cornering illumination, rear parking sensors, Blind Spot Information System, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

All-New XC40 Recharge

However, the most significant upgrade for the 2021 model year is the introduction of the XC40 Recharge P8 powertrain. Volvo has long been on the leading edge of alternative energy innovation, and is now striving for a new goal, that 50-percent of its lineup be electric by 2025. As Volvo's first-ever all-electric vehicle, the XC40 Recharge represents a major step towards making that goal a reality.

Motivation for the XC40 Recharge comes from two electric motors, one for each axle, and a 75 kWh battery pack. The powertrain exerts an exhilarating 402 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque, good for a zero-to-60 sprint of ~4.5 seconds. Recharge offers an emissions-free range of more than 200 miles on a single charge, and a 150 kW DC fast charger can fill an empty battery to 80-percent in just 40 minutes.
